Replace Windows When Ice is Inside

I love Wisconsin weather!

There is something special about waking up to a fresh blanket of snow and seeing ice Icy windowcovering the tree branches. The kids have told me it looks like the trees are covered in glitter, especially when they are reflecting the twinkling of Christmas lights. If you’re anything like me, you like to take a few minutes to take in this serene setting before the craziness of the day takes hold.

That is of course unless you have more ice and frost on the inside of your windows than the outside of them!

I’ve had many people ask me, why does this happen and how can I make it stop?

We’ll cover why and provide some tips on how to fix it below.

WHY DOES IT HAPPEN?

Simply put condensation forms when windows are exposed to cold air on the outside and warm, moist air on the inside. The moisture starts out as water vapor and is drawn to the window pane. Once the temperature is below the dew point – your water vapor turns to liquid. That liquid turns to ice crystals and frost.

DOES IT DAMAGE MY HOME?

Yes! Left untreated water and frost can cause damage to your home and potentially impact your health. If not dealt with, the frost and ice on your windows will damage not only your windows but could damage your walls. Studies show, standing water grows mold which can affect you and your loved ones health.

HOW CAN I FIX IT?

There are many ways to fix condensation on your windows. We’ll cover short term and long term solutions below.

Short term:

  • Run exhaust fans
  • Use a dehumidifier
  • Increase your homes heat setting
  • Wipe up moisture as you see it forming and disinfect with bleach
  • Open window treatments to allow air to dry the moisture
  • Caulk and seal your windows

Long term:

  • Replace Windows

As you can see, there is only one long-term solution to fixing condensation on your windows, and that is replacing your windows.
