Triple-Pane Windows: The Science and Why They’re Worth It
Upgrading your home is an investment, so it helps to know what goes into a high-quality window before you buy. Here at AHT Wisconsin Windows, we specialize in triple-pane, solid-core composite windows built to handle the variety of conditions a Wisconsin home faces year-round. Let’s get into what makes them work, and why they are worth it!
How a Triple-Pane Window Is Built
A triple-pane window holds three panes of glass in a single frame, separated by two sealed chambers. Each chamber is filled with insulating gas, and each pane carries a thin Low-E coating.
Close to 87% of a window’s surface is glass, so its quality drives most of how the window performs. Every window we install uses a full 1 1/8 inch triple-pane insulated unit, and that glass is where the efficiency, the quiet, and the long life all come from.
The frame does the rest of the work. Ours are made from a solid-core expanded polymer composite that resists rot, chipping, and fading, requires no maintenance, and holds its shape through all the seasons. The composite is 400% stronger than vinyl and insulates 214% better, so it does not need the metal reinforcements vinyl windows depend on to stay square. A frame that keeps its shape stays sealed and performs well for decades.
Where the Efficiency Comes From
Once you know how one is built, the way it works follows from three of those parts working together.
- Three panes of glass. Each pane gives heat one more layer to get through, which slows how fast it moves between the inside and outside of your home.
- Insulating gas fills. The inert gas, Argon or Krypton, is a better insulator than air, and it works especially well in the tight space between the panes, which is why AHT uses it. Argon gas dissipates through the glass over time, reducing energy efficiency. AHT uses Krypton gas, which does not dissipate, maintaining its efficiency for 50 years.
- Two Low-E coatings. These thin coatings reflect heat and UV rays while still letting natural light through. They help keep heat inside during winter, block it during summer, and reduce fading on your floors and furniture.
All of this lowers the window’s U-value, which measures how much heat flows through the whole unit: the glass, frame, sash, and spacers together. A lower U-value means a more efficient window, and every AHT window carries an NFRC label with its lab-tested performance numbers. AHT windows are also rated ENERGY STAR Most Efficient, the program’s top rating.
What You’ll Notice at Home
Once the windows are in, here is what makes a difference day to day.
- Lower energy bills. When a home holds its temperature better, the furnace and air conditioner do not have to work as hard, which shows up as savings on your energy bills throughout the year.
- Fewer cold spots. Sitting near an old window in the middle of winter often means feeling a chill come off the glass. With triple-pane windows, that cold feeling can be a thing of the past.
- A quieter home. The added pane and insulating gas help block outside noise, which many homeowners appreciate on busier streets in Appleton, Green Bay, and Madison.
- Long-lasting, low-maintenance windows. Built to handle Wisconsin’s weather, these windows keep performing year after year without the upkeep other windows often need.
Worth the Upgrade
Triple-pane windows will pay off over time with lower energy bills, improved comfort, and long-lasting performance with minimal upkeep. AHT also backs every window with strong warranties: a 50-year transferable, non-prorated manufacturer warranty, a 50-year workmanship warranty, and a 10-year glass breakage warranty.
