How to Clean and Care for Your Replacement Windows

Start With the Frame

The frame is where AHT windows save you the most work. Our solid-core composite frame is maintenance-free, so there is no painting, staining, or sealing to keep up with. It won’t rot, chip, or fade; it resists mold, mildew, and insects, and it won’t expand or contract with Wisconsin’s temperature swings. Cleaning it is about as easy as it gets: a soft cloth with a little mild soap and water wipes the frame down, and you are finished.

How to Clean Specific Window Types

How you clean a window really comes down to how it opens. Here are the ways to clean some of the styles we install:

  • Double-hung windows: Both sashes tilt inward, letting you clean the inside and outside of the glass from inside your home. No ladders, no professional help needed. 
  • Casement windows: A 90-degree hinge lets you pivot the sash inward and clean both sides of the glass from inside the house. 
  • Sliding windows: The operable sashes lift out of the frame and into your home, so both sides of the glass are easy to clean indoors. The screen is removable too, for full access. 
  • Picture windows: These don’t open, so they clean like any other glass surface. You will need access to the exterior unless the window is on the ground floor or you can reach it with a window-cleaning tool. 

A Little Upkeep Goes a Long Way

Keeping your windows in good shape takes very little. Take the screens out and rinse them off, then let them dry fully before they go back in. For the glass, a soft cloth and a gentle glass cleaner keep it clear, which lets the Low-E coating and insulating gas do their job of holding your indoor temperature steady. Wipe out the tracks now and then to keep dust and dirt from building up. A quick routine clean is really all these windows ask for.
